Grid-supporting VSC-HVDC for Enhancing the Stability of Receiving End Power Grid:Forms,Key Technologies, and Prospects
With the large-scale development of new energy, the penetration rate of power electronics in the power grid at the receiving end power grid continues to increase, while the stability basis such as grid inertia and short-circuit capacity will decline. The voltage source converter-high voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC),as an equivalent power source with large capacity and strong controllability, can be upgraded through the control method and equipment capability to improve the stability of power gird from the following aspects, including frequency, voltage, power angle, oscillation, harmonics, and short-circuit current, etc,so as to realize the role of constructing and stabilizing the power grid. This article discusses the research status and key technologies of the control functions in eight aspects of grid-supporting VSC-HVDC.It also anticipates pivotal technologies, including the instrumentation of overloaded converter valves,real-time measurement of grid strength and inertia,as well as cooperative control of regional multi-HVDC systems, thereby offering valuable insights for the design of a next-generation VSC-HVDC capable of actively bolstering power grids.
