Swine influenza virus(SIV)is a kind of respiratory virus infecting pigs, posing a threat to public health. The evolution of SIV was fully revealed by previous researches through whole genome sequencing, molecular biology, epidemiology and other tools. In order to better understand and respond to the evolution, the history of the evolution was briefly reviewed, its classification, basic characteristics, evolution and prevalence were systematically sorted out.The results showed that, based on further analysis on the evolution, the virus was driven to continuously evolve with continuous gene reassortment and mutation due to high frequency of genetic variation.Besides, multiple subtypes of SIV were found in pig populations, and evolved depending on different regions, posing potential risk of infecting humans in some regions. In conclusion, the evolution of SIV was a complex and dynamic process, and its evolutionary direction might pose potential threat to human and animal health. Therefore, the development of livestock industry and public health safety should be safeguarded through strengthening researches on the evolution of SIV and improving the capacity to monitor and prevent the virus.
