Inter-animal Epidemiological Investigation Triggered by an Inter-human Anthrax Event
On July 26,2023,it was reported by the Health Commission of A County in Henan Province, that 3 persons including Ma engaging in the breeding, slaughtering, processing and sale of cattle and sheep were diagnosed and confirmed with cutaneous anthrax. In order to investigate the possible disease sources and spread pathways, and to reduce the risk of inter-animal outbreak and public health,an emergency epidemiological investigation was conducted with a priority to Ma's beef cattle farm under the specific breeding cooperative,Ma's slaughter premises and Laoma Local Beef and Mutton Store associated with the case. The results showed that there was low probability to introduce pathogen by beef cattle from other provinces, the involved persons were more likely to be infected through slaughtering cattle carrying the pathogen that was carried to the farms via personnel or production materials. At present and in the near future, the risk of occurrence of inter-human or animal anthrax was low,but the potential risk could not be ignored to local cattle and sheep production and public health. It was recommended to strengthen publicity of animal disease prevention policies in the local area, popularize knowledge on the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases including anthrax, and make efforts for the prevention and control of these diseases to avoid any recurrence of such event.
