Epidemiological Characteristics of Feline Coronavirus in Beijing City and Genetic Evolution Analysis of Its S Gene
In order to identify the biotypes, serotypes, genetic evolution and epidemiological characteristics of feline coronavirus(FCoV)in Beijing,24 fecal or anal swab samples collected from cats suspected of being infected with FCoV in Beijing Animal Hospital in 2023 were detected by RT-PCR,and followed by S gene amplification and sequencing, the age of the source cats and the distribution characteristics of seasons for sampling were analyzed based on the results. The results showed that 11 out of the 24 suspected samples were detected as FCoV positive, and the nucleotide sequence homology of their S genes ranged from 86.7%to 98.5%,which was highly homologous to the Japanese and German isolates;all the serotypes of the 11 positive samples were identified as FCoV-I,and all the biotypes were feline enterocoronavirus(FECV);the infection rate of FCoV was negatively related to the age of cats, but uncorrelated to seasonal variations. In conclusion, the FCoV strains infecting the cats in Beijing were classified as the same serotype and biotype prevalent throughout the year, especially kittens that were more susceptible, and the strains were likely to be introduced by entry pet cats that should be further monitored when FCoV infection was prevented and controlled.
