On-site Investigation and Medical Treatment of an Outbreak of Histomoniasis in Young Blue Peacocks
In January 2024,young blue peacocks presented symptoms of depression, diarrhoea and inappetence, and died one after another in an arboretum in Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture. In order to find out the causes,on-site investigation and pathological dissection were conducted, and samples were submitted for microscopic examination,PCR assay and gene sequence analysis. It was finally confirmed to be histomoniasis according to clinical symptoms, pathological dissection results as well as microscopic examination and PCR results, after excluding other pathogenic infection. The outbreak was effectively controlled after drug administration. It was presumed that the outbreak was mainly caused by floor rearing, mixing young peacocks with adult ones and poor hygiene of the feeding environment. To this end,it was recommended to effectively reduce possible risk of histotrichosis occurrence through keeping peacocks with net cages in separate groups, giving them balanced nutrition, regularly deworming, timely removing their faeces and maintaining good hygiene of feeding environment.
