In order to identify the prevalence trend and genetic evolution characteristics of feline asterovirus(FeAstV)in China,2 560 samples were collected from cats in 16 administrative divisions at the province level in 7 administrative regions in China in 2023,and detected for FeAstV using RT-PCR,followed by genetic evolution analysis on the major immunogenic protein VP90.The results showed that the total detection rate of FeAstV was 8.01%(205/2 560),and FeAstV infection was present in 6 administrative regions(excluding East China);FeAstV was mostly detected from juvenile cats, female cats and gregarious cats;the amino acid homology between the positive samples and the reference strains was from 68.7%to 97.7%,and the detected strains could be divided into two genetic groups,A and B,and the amino acid homology of VP90 protein among different groups was relatively low(from 68.6%to 73.5%);high mutability was found in the 590-700 amino acid regions of FeAstV VP90 protein in the two groups. In conclusion,FeAstV was widely prevalent in China with continuous variation, and its transmission was influenced by the age,sex and feeding environment of cats, posing a potential risk of zoonotic infection, which should be intensively monitored.
