An Emergency Epidemiological Investigation on the Sudden Outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea in a Farm in Weihai City,Shandong Province
In December 2023,a large number of pigs suddenly suffered from diarrhea and emesis,some infected piglets even died on a swine farm in Weihai City,Shandong Province.In order to control the disease in time,an emergency epidemiological investigation was conducted on the farm.According to the results of on-site investigation and laboratory testing,porcine epidemic diarrhea was confirmed.It was investigated that the pathogen might be introduced mainly due to incomplete disinfection over brokers when they entered the farm,making the epidemic spread through keepers visiting one pig house after another and cross-use of tools,and become serious through stress factors including excessive breeding density and sudden drop in temperature.The outbreak was effectively controlled by taking intervening measures such as feeding with amoxicillin powder and astragalus polysaccharide powder and implementing emergency vaccination.It was indicated by the outbreak that farms should strictly implement biosafety management,and control the disinfection and entry/exit of any visitors,vehicles and tools,with a view to avoiding any serious economic losses that might be caused by any introduction of diseases.
