The Mediating Effect of Components in the Hybrid Semantic Processing of Idioms
Components are grammatical, semantic and cognitive construction. As basic information units in idiom semantic processing, components play a mediating effect in semantic extraction and semantic integration.Hybrid processing,as a more elastic and flexible comprehensive analysis model, not only recognizes the existence of idiom as whole word representation, but also attaches importance to the construction and deconstruction of components. The results show that the particularity of idiom semantic processing is determined by the components to some extent:in the stage of semantic extraction, the frequency and concreteness effects components have a greater effect on low-frequency idioms than on high-frequency idioms, and on idioms with high concreteness than on those with high abstraction. In the stage of semantic integration, the effect of components is affected by the compositionality and the degree of familiarity;the stronger the compositionality of idioms, the more prominent the role of components play in the semantic integration. But with the increase of familiarity, the mediating effect of components will weaken, showing an inverse proportion.
