"The Russian Merchant's Imitation of Elegance":Manners and Nationality in Ostrovsky's Early Plays
In 19th century Russian society, education was not universal. In A.N.Ostrovsky's early plays, the Russian merchant world's pursuit of Western manners and parody form the core of the comedy plot,in which the old and new generations hold very different attitudes toward enlightenment. If their children pursue"Western manners"while denying their own uneducation and ignorance, the old merchants adhere to the traditional values of Russian people.Between"education"and"non-education",merchants construct a unique education cognition based on Russian national values,so"manners"in Ostrovsky's plays can become a unique coordinate system for understanding Russian national character.
