Application of PICO Design Concept in Clinical Teaching of Neurosurgery
Objective:To explore the application effectiveness of the PICO design concept in clinical teaching of neurosurgery.Methods:Seventy-two clinical medical students who underwent neurosurgery internship from January 2018 to January 2020 at our hospital were selected as the research subjects. They were randomly divided into an experimental group(n=36)and a control group(n=36).Both groups underwent a 2-month internship under the guidance of the same preceptor. The control group received conventional clinical teaching, while the experimental group received clinical teaching based on the PICO design concept. The theoretical knowledge and clinical operation skill exam scores, student evaluations, and clinical teaching satisfaction were compared between the two groups after the internship. Results:After the teaching, the experimental group's scores in theoretical knowledge and clinical operation skills were higher than those of the control group(P<0.05).The experimental group also scored higher in evaluations of the teaching process, guidance, and effectiveness of clinical teaching(P<0.05).Moreover,the satisfaction of the experimental group with clinical teaching was significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion:The application of the PICO design concept in the clinical teaching of neurosurgery significantly improves the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of interns, enhances the quality of clinical teaching, and increases teaching satisfaction.
