Focusing on the requirements of full tide berthing for ro-ro ships proposed in the SINOPEC Hainan Refining &Chemical Co.,Ltd.Ro-Ro Ramp Reconstruction Project,a multi-scheme comparison and selection study was carried out,and a new scheme of using tugboats to assist large ro-ro ship T-type berthing was proposed, aiming to seek the optimal design scheme with short construction period, low investment, and less construction and operation workload. The physical model experiments on ship mooring were used to study the ship movement, cable tension and tugboat configuration scheme under different loading degrees, different water levels and corresponding wind, wave and current combinations when the stern of a 10 000-ton ro-ro ship was T-type berthed at the high water level ramp. The test results show that under the appropriate combination of wind, wave and current conditions, the use of tugboat assistance can make the ship movements meet the requirements. It is feasible to use tugboats to assist the large ro-ro ship T-type berthing, and the corresponding operation standards for mooring, loading and unloading are put forward, especially the restrictions on water level, wind force, wave, tugboat, berthing mode, etc.,which can provide reference for similar engineering design.
