Production, extraction and characterization of the sulfated polysaccharides in aerobic granular sludge
In this study, the anaerobic granular sludge was used as seed sludge for domesticated cultivation of aerobic granular sludge in the sequencing batch reactors(SBR).By optimizing methods for extraction of the extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)and purification of the extracted sulfated polysaccharides, the production of the sulfated polysaccharides in SBR with aerobic granular sludge was investigated. The results showed that the running performance of SBR was steady and the removal of COD,NH4+-N,TN,and TP reached above 90%,97%,70%,and 93%,respectively.The EPS and sulfated polysaccharides could be favorably extracted from aerobic granular sludge with combined methods of ultrasonication,water-bath heating, and alkali treatment. After deproteinization and purification, the concentration of sulfated polysaccharides reached 56.6mg/g EPS,which was approximately 1.4 times of that contained in the anaerobic granular sludge. This result indicated that the aerobic granular sludge is conducive to produce the sulfated polysaccharides, providing an efficient route for high-value transformation and recycling of organic matters in wastewater sludge.
