Research advances in secondary metabolism gene mining involved in Genus Penicillium
Penicillium genus is a common fungi widely distributed in the natural environment, which is the most important source of medicine, and can produce a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites, including antibacterial,anti-tumor and anti-virus activities compounds. These bioactive secondary metabolites are one of the most important sources of the lead compounds in drug discovery. In recent years, with the conducting of the complete genomic sequence analysis and the mining of Penicillium resources from extreme environment, exploring novel secondary metabolites from Penicillium by using gene mining methods have become a new research hotspot. This paper reviews the secondary metabolite gene clusters and their metabolites obtained by gene mining strategies in genus Penicillium. It is hoped that this review will be helpful for exploring secondary metabolite gene clusters of Penicillium and other fungi, inferring gene function, deducing new synthetic metabolic pathways and obtaining new metabolites.
