Numbering of Yuan Dynasty Banknotes and Its Function:Focusing on"Liao"
There are many words related to"liao"in the Yuan Dynasty paper currency system, such as"liao-chao(new banknotes)","liao-hao(banknote number)","liao-li(banknote denomination)","pei-liao(banknote grouping)",etc. The character"liao"in the words"liao-chao"and"liao-hao"indicates quantity and number. However,in the Yuan Dynasty, banknote number is represented by two Chinese characters from the book named"Qian-zi-wen(Thousand-Character Classic)".The overall amount of the numbers from"Qian-zi-wen"is not enough for each banknote getting a unique number. In the word"liao-li","liao"represents the denomination, and the"liao-hao"as banknote number is linked to the denomination of the banknote.Therefore,in"pei-liao","liao"is related to both the number and the denomination."pei-liao"is a newly developed system in the banknote reform in the 24th year of Zhi-yuan Reign. This system required banknotes with the same"zi-liao"combined into a group during the banknote exchange process This is not only convenient for counting the number of banknotes, but also can be used to prevent counterfeit banknotes. The emergence of the"pei-liao"system reflects the characteristics of the Yuan Dynasty's banknote system that was continuously improved during its use.
