A Study of the Production of Weapons in Guangdong during the Taxation Reform of the Ming Dynasty
Weapons production was an important part of the military logistics supply in the Ming Dynasty. In the early Hongwu period, weapons were produced by counties for use by the Weisuo. From the middle of Hongwu, weapons were produced by the Weisuo. The raw materials for weapons production were jointly borne by the Weisuo and counties. They were initially in kind, but later changed to the tax reform,it was changed to levy silver, called Junqiliaoyin. In the early Jiajing period, the weapons production styles and quantities of the Guangdong were fixed, and Junqiliaoyin was gradually fixed;during the Wanli period, the addition of the Guangdong Weisuo was completed, and Junqiliaoyin was finally fixed and became the fixed taxe.At that time, there were constant bandits and pirates in Guangdong, the Weisuo had to produce a lot of weapons. When Junqiliaoyin was insufficient, the Weisuo had to rely on allocations from counties, increasingly controlled by counties. Moreover, the weapons produced by the Weisuo were of poor quality, the private arms industry has become an important supplement. The changes in arms production in Guangdong present the actual status of taxation operations under the dual management system of the Weisuo and counties in the Ming Dynasty,as well as the financial and military interaction between the two.
