Intergenerational Mobility of Urban Residents in China:From the Perspective of Intergenerational Transmission of Relative Poverty
Improving intergenerational mobility is an inevitable requirement for achieving common prosperity. This pa-per examines the intergenerational transmission level of the relative poverty of urban residents based on CFPS2010-2018 &CHIP 1988-1995 data and further analyzes the mechanism of blocking the intergenerational transmission of relative poverty. This paper finds that there is not much difference in the level of relative poverty between generations measured by similar relative poverty standards.Furthermore, through regression analysis,it is found that the probability of intergenera-tional transmission of relative poverty among urban residents is about 20%,and male offspring are more likely to fall into the relative poverty intergenerational transmission trap than female offspring, there are also great differences among other characteristic groups.Mechanism analysis suggests that only completing high school has a weak effect on reducing the rela-tive poverty for the next generation while completing the college education is the key to blocking the intergenerational trans-mission of relative poverty. It is still difficult for the offspring with lower occupational status to jump out of the trap of inter-generational transmission of relative poverty. In addition, social capital(especially cognitive social capital)plays a positive role, while organizational social capital is still insufficient.
