Does Promoting Urbanization Improve Public Participation in Environmental Protection
In recent years, the development trend of urbanization in China has become increasingly apparent,charac-terized by both horizontal expansion towards the outskirts and vertical growth towards greater heights. It is a crucial matter for all sectors of Chinese society to explore how to foster a harmonious urbanization model that integrates urban economic de-velopment and ecological civilization construction.Using the urbanization index constructed by DMSP/OLS night light data and the Chinese General Social Survey in 2013,our findings show that promoting urbanization can significantly improve the public's participation in environmental protection.Further, the benchmark conclusion can be explained by the publicvs edu-cational human capital, income level, utilization of the internet, and recognition of building a civilized city. Our findings not only provide empirical evidence for the construction of an environmental governance system with public participation but also provide a large useful enlightenment for promoting the coordination between urban economic development and ecological civilization construction.
