Application of Teaching Mode Suitable for Medical English in the Education of International Students From the Perspective of ESP
Objective To investigate the application of teaching models suitable for medical English in the education of international students from the perspective of English for special purpose(ESP).Methods A total of 60 international undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine at Nanjing Medical University School of International Education from October 2021 to October 2022 were selected as the research subjects.The students were divided into a control group(n=30)and an observation group(n=30)according to class.The control group was given traditional teaching,while the observation group was given teaching mode suitable for medical English from the perspective of ESP.Comprehensive score,literature retrieval and review abilities,evaluation of textbook effectiveness,and satisfaction with textbook were compared between the two groups.Results The comprehensive score of the observation group was(82.56±5.25)points,higher than(74.41±6.58)points of the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The proportions of pass and excellent students in the observation group were 56.67%(17/30)and 43.33%(13/30).The proportions of pass and excellent students and failure students in the control group were 76.67%(23/30),16.67%(5/30)and 6.67%(2/30).The evaluation of accurate application of specialist vocabulary,scientific review content,grammar scores,and textbook effectiveness in the observation group was higher than that in the control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.001).Students in the observation group were more satisfied with teaching methods and course participation when compared with the control group,and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).While there was no significant difference in satisfaction with language ability development,independent thinking,teacher-student interaction,or self-learning ability(P>0.05).Conclusion The teaching mode suitable for medical English from the perspective of ESP can effectively improve literature retrieval and review abilities of international students,improve their evaluation of textbook effectiveness,and increase their satisfaction with teaching methods,course participation,etc.
