Exploration and Practice of the Teaching and Training of Palliative Medicine on the Cultivation of Empathy Ability of Physicians in Neuro-Intensive Care Department
Objective To explore the effect of palliative medicine teaching on the empathic ability of physicians in neurological intensive care department. Methods A total of 30 physicians who participated in the training in the neuro-intensive care sub-specialty of the department of neurosurgery of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital from September 2021 to December 2022 were selected as the study subjects, and divided into the experimental group and the control group by random number table method, with 15 physicians in each group. The experimental group conduct the neuro-intensive care medicine training based on the integration of palliative medicine courses, the control group received conventional neurological intensive medicine training. Before and after the training, the Jefferson scale of physician empathy(JSPE)was applied to assess the impact of palliative medicine teaching on empathy between the two group. At the same time, the JSPE scores were performed at 3,6 and 12 months after the training to observe the changes in empathy ability. Results In the experimental group, the JSPE scores in perspective selection, compassion and empathy were(50.00±3.21)points,(38.53±3.02)points and(9.60±1.63)points,respectively,which were higher than the scores before training[(37.87±3.02)points.(27.60±1.64)points and(7.53±1.68)points],the difference were statistically significant(P<0.05).During the follow-up time after training, the scores of the three dimensions of JSPE in the experimental group were still improved, but the difference were not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusion The teaching of palliative medicine can improve the empathic ability of physicians in department of neurological intensive care, and can maintain long-term stability.
