Objective To reduce the zero citation rate and improve the academic quality and influence of the Chinese Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy by analyzing the characteristics of zero-cited papers. Methods The databases of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang were searched to retrieve the zero-cited papers published in the Chinese Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy from 2006 to 2020.A systematic analysis was conducted on the publication time, download frequency, columns, disciplines, author information, funding status, reference number, and keywords of the zero-cited papers. Results A total of 92 zero-cited papers were identified, with a zero citation rate of 5.0%,and an average download frequency of 171.8 times per paper. The first authors of these zero-cited papers included 39 males and 53 females. The average age of these authors was 34.9±8.2 years old.Half(50.0%)of the zero-cited papers were published by the first authors with a master's degree and 33.7%were published by the first authors with medium professional titles.Majority of the zero-cited papers(92.4%)were co authored. The average co-authorship rate was 4.6 authors per paper.Overall,39 funds were identified in the 92 zero-cited papers. The ratio of funds to papers was 0.30.There were 64(69.6%)unfunded papers. The zero citation rate of the case report column was the highest, accounting for 50.0%.About 54.3%of the zero-cited papers did not contain any figure, and 58.7%did not contain any table. The average number of citations was 11.0.The highest keyword frequency was bloodstream infection(9 papers),antimicrobial susceptibility testing(7 papers),and antifungal therapy(6 papers). Conclusions The zero citation rate of papers in Chinese Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy is relatively low.The requirements for manuscripts in the case report column can be appropriately increased to avoid homogeneous publication of papers.Meanwhile,it is also necessary to pay attention to the depth of research topic and establish feedback mechanisms after publication to reduce the zero citation rate of papers.
