On the Introduction of"Coast Defence"in Late Qing Period:A Case Study of the Chinese Translation of Terminologies in A Treatise on Coast-defence
"A Treatise on Coast-defence"was the first translated theoretical work on coast defence to be intro-duced from the West during the late Qing period in China.It brought with it the concepts and knowledge of Western coast defence,thus initiating the collision and integration of Chinese and Western terminologies and conceptions of"coast defence."This work also served as a significant source of discourse for Qing officials in their discussions on coast defence.Consequently,in order to understand the concept of"coast defence"during the late Qing period,it is essential to consider the process of translating Western coast defence terminology.This article takes the core term"coast defence"as an example and utilizes a conceptual construction model based on cognitive terminology studies to analyze the translation of terms at linguistic,contextual,and conceptual levels.The aim is to explore the introduction of"coast defence"concepts in the late Qing period and provide a concise evaluation of the accuracy of their translation.
