A Study of Hopkins's Translation of the Six Scripts:A Concurrent Review of the Translation of the Six Scripts by 19th-Century Western Scholars
In 1881,the translation of Dai Tong's"Liu Shu Gu"by British scholar Lionel Charles Hopkins was the first overseas philological work in Western scholarship to include a monograph on Chinese character forma-tion.The book not only includes Hopkins's view of the Six Scripts, but also cites the studies by a number of 19th-century sinologists. At present, there is no such study in the academic field.Based on this, this paper takes Hopkins's the Six Scripts as the research material,in order to arouse our attention to overseas philology research.
