Sci-Technological Translators'Thinkings on Faithfulness,Expressiveness & Elegance in the Republic Period of China-A Research Based on the Translation Prefaces and Postscripts
This article begins by reviewing the literature on the concept of faithfulness,expressiveness,and ele-gance as introduced by Yan Fu,selecting interpretations that are both representative and well-substantiated to establish the historical meaning of these ideas.It then presents 14 prefaces and postscripts from translators,which relate to the concepts of faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance,and are drawn from a collection of historical materials.These documents offer a window into the translation philosophies of a group of scientific and technological translators during the Republican era in China,providing a brief analysis of their perspectives.The study concludes by highlighting that prefaces and postscripts in scientific and technological translations serve as valuable sources for historical research,suggesting that greater scholarly attention should be directed towards ex-amining these introductory and concluding sections.
