The Negative Effect of Alumni Relationship on Research Output——Evidence from a Large Sample of the National Natural Science Foundation of China
Alumni relationship significantly influences research output.Nevertheless, due to challenges in accessing educational back-ground data, research on alumni relationship's impact on research output remains limited.Utilizing data from 30989 National Natural Science Foundation projects(2009-2014),we developed alumni centrality and research output metrics. Our findings revealed the fol-lowings.①Alumni relationship significantly and negatively impacts research output, with a more pronounced effect on ordinary papers than high-quality ones.Additionally, the adverse influence on technical efficiency outweighs that on scale efficiency, and direct alumni relationship have a more substantial impact than indirect ones.②The negative impact of alumni relationship on research output intensi-fies during a researcher's early career,in high-knowledge-barrier disciplines, and with affiliations to 985/211 universities or the Chi-nese Academy of Sciences. It's also stronger when papers are published in Chinese.③Alumni relationship negatively affects research out-put by bolstering a researcher's weak ties and shrinking project teams. Our research underscores alumni relationship's significance in sci-entific research and offers insights for optimizing research resource allocation in China.
