Research and implications on graphical abstracts in academic journals:A case study in agricultural field
[Purposes]With graphic abstract(GA)composed of images and brief text,the key content of journal articles can be intuitively conveyed to help readers quickly understand the highlights.GA can also make journal articles more attractive.By analyzing the development status of GA,the adoption of GA can be comprehensively understood to provide references for the high-quality development of Chinese journals.[Methods]By searching the Elsevier database service platform and browsing journal websites,we analyzed the overall publication status of GA in journal articles,as well as the GA policies,the number of journal articles with GA,and service modes of GA in agricultural journals.[Findings]Result shows that the number of journals and journal articles adopting GA is increasing each year,and more journals,especially high-quality ones,are beginning to require mandatory submission of GA.However,strictly speaking,there is currently no retrieval service specialized in GA.[Conclusions]GA is becoming increasingly important.However,the role of GA is far from expected.Therefore,suggestions for the creation,promotion,and utilization of GA are proposed from the perspectives of journals,authors,and libraries to provide references for Chinese journals adopting GA and libraries providing GA services.
