Practice of Science Beyond Experimentation:A Study of Sho-Chow Woo's Presiding Over the Relocation of the Institute of Chemistry During the Period of the Full-Scale War of Resistance
After the outbreak of the full-scale War of Resistance, the primary problem facing the Academia Sinica was how to preserve the fledgling national scientific research force and maintain the research work of the institutes. The relocation of the institutes to the hinterland became the main solution to this problem. In April 1938,Sho-Chow Woo,a research fellow, was entrusted by Chang-Kong Chuang with the task of transporting the Institute's books and equipment from Shanghai to Kunming. The relocation was not complete due to the inconsistent response of the Institute's director to the location and Chang-Kong Chuang's insistence on his own resignation. The rebuilding of the Institute in Kunming prompted Sho-Chow Woo to ponder whether or not to become acting director, and his shift in wartime status was not only a rational judgement based on social realities, but also reflected the different perceptions of scientific practice among the community of scientists.
