The Whole Story of Science and Technology Scholars Studying in Britain from 1973 to 1975
Based on documents, archives, and interviews, this article explores the process of visiting scholars of science and technology to Britain from 1973 to 1975.It describes the whole process including selection, centralized training, studying abroad, and being prematurely called back.Though not as well-known as other study abroad programs, the program also made an impact on the participants. The article further discusses the obstacles that hampered the deployment of overseas students and prohibited them from absorbing advanced foreign cultures during the Cultural Revolution.Under the influence of the left-wing ideology and the Gang of Four, efforts to correct left-wing deviation in the field of science and technology, such as sending scientists and engineers to study abroad, were actually highly conservative.Only by adopting a more open mindset could the efforts of studying abroad and the modernization process proceed more smoothly and quickly.
