"Formerly Silk,Lately Weed":An Analysis of the Decline of Cannabis from the Yuan to the Qing Dynasty
Cannabis sativa L.,a plant of the Moraceae family,is domesticated by ancient ancestors and has become one of the most important crops in traditional Chinese agricultural production, but has since undergone a period of decline. This paper explores the decline of cannabis as a fibre crop, and the reduction in the value of cannabis cloth as a taxable product,as the main indicators of the decline of the cannabis crop. The paper argues that the Yuan Dynasty was a major turning point in the decline of the cannabis crop. This transition was the result of a combination of natural attributes and social factors, with policy factors playing a dominant role. From the Yuan to the Qing Dynasty, the cannabis crop was no longer used as a major source of clothing, but it still played a role in people's lives. The decline of the cannabis crop led to a restructuring of agriculture, and the combination of grain and cotton become the dominant agricultural cropping structure and continues today.
