The Application of Interview in Collecting Literature on English Translation of Chinese Scientific and Technological Classics:A Case Study of Konrad Herrmann(The Translator of Kao Gong Ji)
The systematic and comprehensive collection,collation and studying of literature on English translation of Chinese scientific and technological classics should cover the oral forms.The English version of Kao Gong Ji translated by Konrad Herrmann(initially published in China)was co-published internationally in 2020.It then enjoyed a favorable reception among scholars in the area of history of science and technology,contributing significantly to the international circulation of Chinese science and civilization.By drawing on the methodology of oral history of science and technology,this paper interviews Prof.Konrad Herrmann to uncover his academic background and achievements in rendering Chinese science and technology,and discusses the issues of Kao Gong Ji throughout the translation and publication process.All these efforts are conducive to enriching the extant literature on English translation of Chinese scientific and technological classic,enhancing the understanding of this translator and promoting the in-depth study of the academic values of his translated Kao Gong Ji.
