Between Tradition and Modernity:Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Institute of Chemistry,Academia Sinica during the Republican Era
Academia Sinica and the scientificization of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)are both important topics in the history of modern science and technology.The selection and practice of traditional Chinese medicine research by the Academia Sinica,the highest academic research institution in the Republic of China,is of great significance to the analysis of modern Chinese scientific culture.The paper systematically examines the evolution process of Chinese medicine research in the Institute of Chemistry,Academia Sinica,and reconstructs the development and deficiencies of Chinese medicine research under the path of pharmacognosy and chemistry with the participation of scientists from different disciplines,as well as the efforts of researchers to make the pharmaceutical research independent in Academia Sinica in different periods.It is believed that the rapid turnover of personnel,limitations of technical means,and lack of in-depth cooperation between different institutions and disciplines are the main reasons for the limited and scattered research results of traditional Chinese medicine in the Institute of Chemistry.The pursuit and limitations of Academia Sinica's in TCM research is the epitome of the scientificization of TCM during the Republic of China,reflecting the choice and construction of scientific culture between tradition and modernity.
