Research progress on plant-derived natural products against enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli
Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli(EHEC)is a zoonotic pathogen that poses a significant threat to public health due to its ability to induce severe systemic hemolytic uremic syndrome(HUS)during an outbreak. However, traditional antibiotic treatment not only leads to the development of antibiotic resistance, but also promotes the release of Shiga toxin(Stx)to aggravate the disease. Thus,it is imperative to develop novel drugs for the treatment of EHEC infections. The structural and functional diversity of plant-derived natural products endows them with immense potential for inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing virulence, making them a valuable resource for the development of novel anti-EHEC drugs. This article introduced the types and characteristics of plant-derived natural products and summarized the research on specific plant natural products that inhibited bacterial growth and virulence factors of EHEC,aiming to provide insights and a basis for the prevention and treatment of EHEC infections.
