Research progress on enhancement of mass transfer and chemical reaction by microdroplets
Gas-liquid or liquid-liquid two-phase systems are widely encountered in chemical processes;such as distillation;absorption;extraction;multiphase reaction.Conventional macroscopic contact mode between two phases suffers from issues such as small contact area;low mass transfer efficiency and slow reaction rate.Microdroplets are considered as an effective approach to solve these problems owing to the advantages of large surface area;high generation frequency and relatively independent droplet systems;which could greatly intensify interphase mass transfer and chemical reaction. As a medium of mass transfer and reaction;microdroplets can effectively improve the limitation of two-phase macroscopic contact and have been widely used in various chemical unit operations. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the research progress in the field of microdroplet-based enhancement of mass transfer and chemical reaction. The prospects for future studies on the field are also given.
