Research progress in the chemistry of novel vanadoborates with extended structures of heteropolyvanadates
Vanadoborates(VBOs),which miraculously combine the structural characteristics of the vanadates and borates, are a growing family among the polyoxometalates(POMs),containing both V-O and B-O groups.Vanadium and oxygen can form a variety of coordination geometries such as[VO6]octahedron,[VO5]square pyramid,and[VO4]tetrahedron,and boron and oxygen can form a[BO4]tetrahedron,[BO3]plane triangle and many derived structure types, both of which can obtain a diverse VBOs topological structure through the common vertex, common edge or coplanar connection mode between the polyhedra.Due principally to their structural plasticity that vanadium atoms present in different oxidation states,VBOs exhibit diverse structural architectures combined with multitude practical applications in different areas, such as catalysis, magnetism, nonlinear optics, electronic conductors and lithium batteries. This review focuses on the recent progress in the structural design and performance research of novel VBOs based on our research group and related research groups at home and abroad. These series of compounds have been categorized according to different[VxBy]n-building blocks, and then the structural characteristics, synthetic strategies, and functional applications of some representative compounds have also been summarized. Finally, the outlook of their future development is proposed.
