Progress in preparation and application of functional double emulsions
Double emulsions are a kind of multiphase system with inner droplets inside.Because of the advantages of designable structures and encapsulation ability of diversified active substances,it has been widely used in many fields such as chemical industry,biology,and medicine.It is of great significance to study various methods for functional double emulsions preparation,and to elucidate the regulation laws of encapsulation structure,composition,size and uniformity of the resultant functional double emulsions.In this paper,the preparation methods of functional double emulsions and the research progress in typical applications in recent years are systematically reviewed.Specifically,the preparation of double emulsions and their related functional materials based on membrane emulsification,microfluidic emulsification,phase inversion and osmotic-pressure-driven methods are initially introduced,and then the controllable construction of double nanoemulsions is also briefly introduced.Finally,this review summarizes new research progress in the application of double emulsions in different fields,and also looks forward to the rational design of the structures of double emulsions and its future development trend in the emerging fields.This review could provide scientific guidance for the design of functional double emulsions.
