Study on the measurement and influencing factors of GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China
Although rare earth industry of China has resource advantages, the profit is weak due to lack of competitiveness in the middle and lower reaches of the industry and it is urgent to study the rare earth industry of China from the perspective of global value chain(GVC).Based on the matching data of China's Industrial Enterprises Database and China's Customs Enterprises Database from 2004 to 2014,the paper uses the GVC embedment degree index from enterprise level to calculate the global value chain(GVC)embedment degree of 367 rare earth enterprises in China. It is found that the GVC embedment degree of China's whole rare earth enterprises, national rare earth enterprises and foreign-funded rare earth enterprises have been rising during this period. The GVC embedment degree level of national rare earth enterprises is low and the rising speed is relatively slow while the GVC embedment degree level of foreign-funded rare earth enterprises is relatively high.Foreign-funded rare earth enterprises are the driving force to promote the GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China. The paper constructs a quantitative model by using the micro-enterprises data from 2004 to 2014 and empirically studies the influencing factors of GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China. The results shows that foreign direct investment is the primary driving force for the improvement of GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China. The enterprise scale is an important factor to the improvement of GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China. The increase of export intensity of enterprises doesn't lead to the increase of GVC embedment degree of rare earth enterprises in China, but inhibits it greatly.Further empirical research shows that foreign direct investment, enterprise labor productivity, enterprise capital intensity and enterprise size have significant promoting effects on GVC embedment degree of foreign-funded rare earth enterprises while export intensity has a significant inhibiting effect on GVC embedment degree of foreign-funded rare earth enterprises.Enterprise export intensity and enterprise capital intensity have significant inhibiting effect on the improvement of GVC embedment degree of national rare earth enterprises. This paper is a meaningful attempt to study the international competitiveness of China's rare earth from the micro-GVC perspective.
