Feasibility of Ecological Momentary Assessment in Suicide Research
Objective:To investigate the feasibility of using Ecological Momentary Assessment(EMA)based on smart-phones and wearable sensor devices to dynamically monitor of suicidal thoughts in the Chinese culture context.Methods:Thirty-two adults diagnosed with mood disorders and experiencing suicidal ideation(SI)were recruited from outpatient clin-ics in three hospitals of China.Over a 28-day EMA period, recruited subjects were required to complete 5~8 EMA surveys of SI and related factors daily via smartphones. They also wore a smart band daily to objectively collect data on sleep and ex-ercise.Results:Participants completed an average of 23.0±8.0 days of surveys, with 68.8%completing the full 28 days.A total of 3,780 surveys were sent, and 2,557(67.6%)were responded to.The average number of responses was 79.9±47.1,and the average number of days wearing the smart band was 19.5±10.3.Conclusion:This study reveals the potential of us-ing smartphones and wearable sensor devices to investigate the dynamic changes of suicidal thoughts among adults with mood disorders in the Chinese cultural context.Further research can be conducted to explore the underlying mechanisms and predictive factors of suicidal thoughts.
