The Effect of the Dark triad on Conspicuous Consumption:Mediating Effects of the Desire for Fame and Sense of Power
Objective:From the perspective of life history theory, this study explored the relationship between the Dark triad, the desire for fame, sense of power, and conspicuous consumption, confirming results from previous research and fur-ther analyzing them.Methods:1186 college students were tested using the Conspicuous Consumption Scale(CCS),the Lev-enson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale(LSRP),the Machiavellianism Personality Scale(MPS),the Narcissism Personality In-ventory(NPI),the Desire for Fame Scale(DFS),and the Generalized Sense of Power Scale(GPS).Results:(1)the Dark tri-ad positively predicted conspicuous consumption;(2)the desire for fame and sense of power both played mediating roles be-tween the three dark personality traits and conspicuous consumption. Conclusion:These findings suggest that the Dark tri-ad increases the risk of conspicuous consumption, which is through the mediating roles of the desire for fame and sense of power.
