The Association between Exposure to Domestic Violence and Internalizing and Externalizing Problems in Primary School Students:The Mediating Role of Anger Rumination and Moderating Role of Gender
Objective:The present study explored the association between exposure to domestic violence and internaliz-ing and externalizing problems in primary school students.Besides, the present study examined the mediating role of anger rumination and moderating role of gender. Methods:A sample of 462 primary school students(boys=255,Mge=10.71,SD=0.68)completed the multiple forms of violence scale, anger rumination scale, center for epidemiological survey-depression scale, social anxiety scale for children, and reactivity-proactive aggression questionnaire.Results:(1)The relationships be-tween each pair of exposure to domestic, anger rumination, internalizing problems(i.e.,depression and social anxiety),and externalizing problems(i.e.,aggressive behaviors)were correlated significantly and positively;(2)Anger rumination played a mediating role between exposure to domestic violence and internalizing/externalizing problems;(3)Gender moderated the re-lation between anger rumination and aggressive behaviors, that is,the relation between anger rumination and aggressive be-haviors was significantly stronger in boys. Conclusion:These findings suggest that more lessons regarding emotion regula-tion strategies should be set up in primary schools to reduce the level of anger rumination in students and further prevent their internalizing/externalizing problems.
