Relationship between Peer Victimization and Children's Depression:The Moderating Effects of Individual and Group-level Hope
Objective:The aim of this study was to explore the moderating role of individual and group-level hope in the associations between peer victimization and children's depression.Methods:A sample of 825 children completed the scales measuring peer victimization,depression and hope.Peer groups were identified through the Social Cognitive Map(SCM).Results:(1)The relationship between peer victimization and depression was moderated by children's hope.For chil-dren with higher level of hope,peer victimization was more strongly associated with depression,but the general level of de-pressive symptoms was lower than children with lower level of hope;(2)Group-level hope negatively predicted children's depression;(3)Group-level hope moderated the relationship between peer victimization and children's depression.Specifi-cally,the effect of peer victimization on depression was much stronger in the groups with lower hope.Conclusion:The re-sults revealed the function of individual characteristics and contextual factors in victimized children's psychological adjust-ment.
