Prediction of Parental Psychological Control on Children's Anxiety:The Buffering Effect of the Other Parent-child Closeness
Objective:To examine the moderating effect of one parent's closeness to children on the relationship be-tween the other parent's psychological control and children's anxiety and their gender difference. Methods:Totally 971 children from third to fifth grades were surveyed with the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale,Parental Psychological Control Scale and Parent-Child Closeness Scale twice with one-year interval.Results:(1)Parental psychological control signifi-cantly and positively predicted the following children's anxiety.(2)One parent's closeness to daughters moderated the rela-tionships between the other parent's psychological control and anxiety for daughters but not for boys. Conclusion:Parental psychological control could cause children's anxiety, and father/mother-daughter closeness moderated the relationship be-tween maternal/paternal psychological control and daughters'anxiety. These findings suggest that parent-daughter close-ness can buffer or alleviate the impact of spouse's negative parenting behavior on daughter's anxiety.
