Left-behind Adversity and Psychological Adjustment of Children:The Roles of Stress and Personal Growth Initiative
Objective:To investigate the predictive effect of left-behind adversity on psychological adjustment among left-behind children(LBC)and the roles of stress and personal growth initiative(PGI)in this relationship. Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted with 4007 rural children from grades 4 to 9.Among them,2302 left-behind children were taken as the analysis objects, and the other were taken as the control group, only to be compared in psychological ad-justment.Results:(1)The psychological adjustment level of left-behind children and former left-behind children were sig-nificantly lower than that of non-left-behind children;(2)After controlling for gender and school period,left-behind adver-sity had a significant negative predictive effect on children's psychological adjustment(β=-0.64,P<0.001).In this predic-tive relationship, stress and PGI played a mediating role independently and played the role in a chain mediating model through the stress → PGI path;(3)PGI had a cushioning effect on the second half of the independent mediating effect of stress. With the increase of PGI,the mediating ability of stress on the relationship between left-behind adversity and psy-chological adjustment decreased.Conclusion:Left-behind adversity is an important risk factor for the low psychological adjustment of LBC,and it is partly realized by inducing stress and reducing PGI.PGI plays a protective effect on their psy-chological adjustment.
