Parental Overprotection and Difficulty Explanatory Style of College Students:The Mediating Roles of Authenticity and Depression
Objective:To investigate college students'parental overprotection in relation to authenticity, depression and two distinct types of difficulty explanatory style(i.e.,difficulty-as-improvement and difficulty-as-impossibility).Meth-ods:A total of 706 college students were investigated by s-EMBU,authenticity scale, the Chinese Version of DASS-21 and difficulty explanatory style scale.Results:(1)College students'parental overprotection,authenticity,depression,inter-preting experienced difficulty as improvement and interpreting experienced difficulty as impossibility were significantly cor-related to each other;(2)Parental overprotection had a significant direct effect on college students'impossible explanatory style and improvement explanatory style in the face of difficulties, and also had indirect effects mediated by authenticity and depression and the chain mediation of the two respectively. Conclusion:The higher the level of parental overprotec-tion,the lower the improvement explanatory style and the higher the impossible explanatory style of college students in the face of difficulties.Authenticity and depression played a chain-mediated mediating effect in this association.
