Sex Differences in Attitudes Toward Homosexuality:The Mediating Role of In-group Differentiation and Gender Neutralization
Objective:To explore the relationship between gender variables and attitudes toward homosexual groups in the Chinese context,as well as the mediating role of inter-group differentiation and the moderating role of neutralization.Methods:234 heterosexuals were investigated by gender role scale, homosexual attitude Scale and inter-group Differentia-tion Scale. Results:There were significant gender differences in subjects'attitudes towards homosexual groups.Compared with the female subjects, the male subjects had more negative attitudes toward homosexuals;Participants had more negative attitudes toward gay men than lesbians.Inter-group differentiation played a partial mediating role between gender and ho-mosexual attitudes, and gender role neutrality played a positive mediating role between inter-group differentiations.Con-clusion:Heterosexual men are more likely than heterosexual women to have homophobic prejudice and have more negative attitudes toward homosexual men.Gender variables can influence attitudes towards the gay community through inter-group differentiation. The influence of inter-group differentiation on attitudes towards homosexuals is mainly reflected in hetero-sexuals with a high degree of neutralization.
