The Relationship Between Procrastination and Sleep Quality:The Mediating Effects of Rumination and Depression and Gender Differences
Objective:The current study aimed at exploring the mediating effects of rumination and depression in the re-lationship between procrastination and sleep quality as well as their gender differences.Methods:A sample of 5,704 stu-dents was recruited,and the Aitken Procrastination Inventory(API),Ruminative Responses Scale(RRS),Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9)and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)were used.Results:(1)The correlations among sleep quality,rumination,depression,and procrastination were positive and statistically significant;(2)Procrastination showed a significantly positive effect on college students'sleep problem,and the chain mediating effect of rumination and depression in the relationship between procrastination and sleep quality was significant;(3)There were gender differences in the effects of procrastination and rumination on depression,as well as in the chain mediating effect of rumination and depression in the relationship between procrastination and sleep quality.Conclusion:Procrastination showed not only a direct effect on sleep quality,but also indirect effects via rumination and depression.A gender gap was also found in the chain mediating ef-fect of rumination and depression.
