Do Psychotherapists Improve in Outcome with Training and Experience?
People tend to believe that the outcome of psychotherapy will improve with experience, but recent studies have shown mixed findings. The current study reviewed changes in psychotherapists'performance with experience related to outcome and process, and discussed variables moderating the effects of experience on outcome and process of psychother-apy.Based on the review of current psychotherapist training, which suggests that insufficient attention to facilitative condi-tion and reflection may be the reason why experience does not improve outcome, the 1+5 training model for psychothera-pists is developed which includes 1 core and facilitative condition, and 5 elements including instruction,modeling,prac-tice,feedback,and reflection.
