The Causes,Consequences,and Implications of Harmful Supervision in Domestic Supervisory Practices
Harmful supervision refers to the supervisory practices of supervisors that cause psychological,emotional,physical harm or trauma to the supervisees.Factors such as the competence of supervisors,the existence of proper com-plaint and grievance mechanisms,power differentials between supervisors and supervisees,and cognitive biases of supervis-ees have certain predictive power on harmful supervision.Harmful supervision has negative effects on the mental and physi-cal health,as well as on career development of supervisees,resulting in issues like anxiety,depression,reduced self-effica-cy,and self-doubt.In the future,it can be further explored from the perspectives of personality,peer supervisors,and work environment in the fields of clinical psychology and management studies to understand the causes of harmful supervision.Additionally,comprehensive investigations into the adverse consequences of harmful supervision can be conducted using methods that span multiple time periods and channels.Finally,this study offers insights for China's practice in the areas of industry and institutional standards,supervisor self-discipline,and supervisee subjective agency.
