The Negative Effects of Positive Gender Stereotypes:The Mediating Role of Depersonalization and Moderating Role of Interpersonal Sensitivity
Objective:To explore whether positive gender stereotypes have negative impacts on interpersonal relations and investigate underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions. Methods:In Study 1(participants were women)and Study 2(participants were men),participants were randomly assigned to the condition in which participants received state-ments related to positive gender stereotypes or the condition in which participants did not receive such stereotypes.Re-sults:(1)Both women and men who received statements related to positive gender stereotypes reacted negatively to those stereotypes, and these negative reactions were mediated by a sense of depersonalization.(2)Interpersonal sensitivity moder-ated the relationship between women's sense of depersonalization and their feelings of dislike toward the person who ex-pressed stereotype. Conclusion:Positive gender stereotypes seem flattering on the surface but have detrimental impacts on interpersonal relations, especially for women with high levels of interpersonal sensitivity.
