Validity and Reliability of Subjective Emptiness Scale in Chinese College Students
Objective:To test the reliability and validity of the Subjective Emptiness Scale(SES)in Chinese college stu-dents,and investigate its measurement invariance across gender. Methods:A sample of 2516 Chinese college students were recruited. The Brief Barratt Impulsivity Scale(BBIS),The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D),Indicators of Meaning in Life(3IML)and Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire(PDQ-4+)were selected as criterion-re-lated indicators.Results:①5 items all had good differentiation, and the correlation between item and the total score ranged from 0.80 to 0.87.②CFA results supported the single-dimensional structure:CFI=0.99,TLI=0.99,SRMR=0.01 and RMSEA=0.07.③Measurement invariance analysis showed that the factor structure of the SES was equivalent across genders.④The reliability analysis showed that the Cronbach's α of the SES was 0.90,the split-half reliability coefficient was 0.84,and the test-retest reliability for two weeks was 0.82.⑤Criteria-related validity test showed that emptiness was positively correlated with impulsiveness, depression, and borderline personality disorder, and negatively correlated with meaning in life.⑥According to demographic variables, students of different gender and different grade had significantly dif-ferent scores. Conclusion:The Chinese version of the SES has good reliability and validity, and the measurement results can be compared across college students of different genders, which can be used as an effective tool to research the empti-ness in Chinese college students.
