Childhood Maltreatment and Internalizing and Externalizing Problems among Adolescents:Unique and Differential Effects
Objective:To explore whether different types of childhood maltreatment(physical abuse,emotional abuse,physical neglect,and emotional neglect)have unique and differential effects on adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems.Methods:The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form(CTQ-SF)and Youth Self Report(YSR)were ad-ministrated to 620 middle school and high school adolescents.Mplus 7.0 software was used to examine the unique and dif-ferential effects of different types of childhood maltreatment on adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems.Re-sults:The results revealed that both childhood emotional abuse and emotional neglect played unique roles in adolescent in-ternalizing problems.Only childhood emotional abuse had a unique effect on adolescent externalizing problems;Besides,childhood emotional neglect had differential effects on adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems.Specifically,the correlation between emotional neglect and adolescent internalizing problems was significantly higher than that between emo-tional neglect and adolescent externalizing problems.Conclusion:There are unique and differential effects of some child-hood maltreatment types on adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems.
