The Relationship between Fear of Missing Out and Depression among College Students:The Mediating Effect of Nomophobia and Social Media Fatigue,and the Moderating Effect of Mindfulness
Objective:To explore the impact of fear of missing out on depression in college students,as well as the mul-tiple mediating effects of nomophobia on social media fatigue and the moderating effect of mindfulness.Methods:A ques-tionnaire survey was conducted on 914 college students using the Fear of Missing Out Scale,Depression Anxiety Stress Scale,Nomophobia Scale,Social Media Fatigue Scale,and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale.Results:(1)The fear of missing out was positively correlated with depression in college students,and nomophobia and social media fatigue func-tioned as mediating roles in this relationship;(2)The direct effect of fear of missing out on depression was regulated by mindfulness,and under low mindfulness conditions,the impact of fear of loss on depression was more significant;(3)Mind-fulness regulated the latter half of the mediating process between fear of missing out and depression in nomophobia.Under low mindfulness conditions,the impact of nomophobia on depression was more significant.Conclusion:Nomophobia and social media fatigue play multiple mediating roles between fear of missing out and depression in college students.Mindful-ness regulates the direct effect of fear of missing out on depression and the latter half of the mediating process of nomopho-bia.
